Ok Im still trying to come to terms with the possibilities of the facebook application that i have just used!! So please pardon my over enthusiastic tone! We were probably the first ones to write about the possibility of facebook killing orkut in India and with what i have just witnessed this could be a reality sooner than later.

Coming to the point.. A Indian IIT Post Graduate has created an Orkut application for Facebook known as MyOrkut. Now this application could possibly make the need to go and visit orkut redundant and also is possibly the most powerful facebook marketing tool to market to orkut users and migrate them to facebook.

orkut app on facebook

HOW DOES THIS APPLICATION WORK?

Step 1 - You add the application on Facebook

Step 2 - You submit your Orkut profile id - NO ORKUT USERNAME OR PASSWORD REQUIRED!

Step 3 - THATS IT! YOU CAN NOW SEE YOUR ORKUT PROFILE FROM WITHIN FACEBOOK!!!

orkut id

I know what you are thinking!!! HOW CAN I SEE MY PROFILE WITHOUT SUBMITTING MY ORKUT USERNAME AND PASSWORD???

Well this is probably one of the smartest tricks I have seen done by an Indian Techie!

HOW DOES THIS APPLICATION WORK?

The application has one profile username and password already hardcoded in the application which is this USER -> http://www.orkut.com/Profile.aspx?uid=1179136824477797609. So once you give your orkut Profile ID the application uses this orkut profile users username password to login and get your details through your profile ID (THIS IS POSSIBLE BECAUSE ORKUT IS A COMPLETELY OPEN SOCIAL NETWORK IF YOU HAVE A PROFILE ID AND YOU ARE A LOGGED IN USER YOU CAN SEE THE PERSONS COMPLETE PROFILE)

SO WHAT ALL CAN ONE DO WITH THIS ORKUT APPLICATION FROM WITHIN FACEBOOK??

ONLY VIEWING AND REPLYING SCRAPS - One can view ones scrap and reply to them. One can also view profiles of your friends that are the latest logged in users i.e. the one that show up on the profile home page.

LIMITATION OF THIS APPLICATION..

This application doesnt allow you to search friends or view all my friends from orkut. It also doesnt show my communities or friends who have requested friendship.

WHAT ARE THE MIND BOGGLING POSSIBILITIES WITH THIS APPLICATION???

YOU CAN ADD ANYONES PROFILE ID FROM ORKUT AND IMPERSONATE TO BE THAT PERSON AND SCRAP HIS OR HER FRIENDS!!!

Yes ill repeat that again.. You could type any orkut profile while adding this application of facebook and then when you post a scrap, it shows the scrap as posted by the person who’s orkut profile was being used.

This means anyone can post scrap impersonating anyone else!!!

NOW THERE IS A CATCH HERE.. THE SCRAPS ARE ACTUALLY SENT FROM THE FACEBOOK PROFILE ID THATS HARDCODED IN THE APPLICATION.. BUT WHAT THE APPLICATION SMARTLY DOES IS EMBEDS YOUR PROFILE PIC WITHIN THE SCRAP!! IT ALSO ADDS A DISCLAIMER MESSAGE - "This message was sent from Facebook. Note: This user was not logged in to Orkut while writing this scrap, hence his/her identity cannot be confirmed."

See screenshot below to understand.

WHY ORKUT MIGHT GET VERY UPSET WITH THIS APPLICATION??

Well its simple this application takes users away from orkut (Also publicizes facebook) and also exposes orkut to huge amount of illegal impersonating scraps with could cause a lot of pain to unknown users who might not know about this application.

In conclusion i would like to say that this application is just a testimony for the growing need of a social network aggregator application (similar to Social Stream Googles own product). Also its a heartening sight to see Indian techies building such state of the art applications! KUDOS TO THE APPLICATION DEVELOPER! :)

 1. i dont think anything big in this

 2. and i love the camaraderie…. the page on which you type in the profile url also states "Dont have an Orkut account? Sign up now." :D

 3. Your blog is nice. I think you should add your blog at BlogAdda and let more people discover your blog. It's a great place for Indian bloggers to be in and I am sure it would do wonders for your blog.

 5. i have a doubt.. i stay i n a place where orkut is banned,,,so i am not able to get my personal url..is it possible to access orkut in facebook then without the url cos i cannot enter orkut site to get my url..

 6. Well…The ingenuity of the techie is to be certainly commented. However this fails seriously on “customer privacy” and “terms & conditions” of Orkut. Facebook might be O.K since they would stipulate that all applications developed by 3rd party are not their responsibility.

 7. Its a good idea and i am glad,an indian came up with this idea.but it would be discouraging if DISCLAIMER MESSAGE not appears.
