First Marriages went Online.. Now its Divorce!! Whats next?

Posted by Rajiv Dingra on September 28th, 2007.

Internet  started as a facilitator so everything that was offline information started migrating online especially jobs, matrimony and real estate classifieds which have been tracked by the recently released comscore report as well. So marriages started being facilitated through the online mode even though India was traditionally known as a conservative country. Brides have their entire profiles on marraige sites and thats now become a common phenomenon. There is even introduction of a portal recently for your seciond marraige and also for having a wedding site post marriage. So if marriage is becoming so online savvy how can divorce be any far behind??

According to this article a chennai court in a first of its kind legal procedure in India granted divorce to a couple, both software engineers, after confirming their consent over webcam!

The divorce order was sent to the man in the US, and the woman, who is working in Australia, immediately by email, and copies were given to their relatives who were present in the court. The entire legal proceeding was over in 15 minutes!!

Wow.. Is this the solution to the long list of cases pending in the indian courts? Online courts and judgements? Well im sure technology which is known to solve many problems can do something about this one as well. Also is this an opportunity for matrimonial sites? Maybe Marraige Counselling which would be the first step before divorce! Bharatmatrimony has a blog for counselling on relationships called relationship helpline but hasn’t done anything more about it from the looks of it ie. taking it up seriously.

I think internet in India is trememdously underexplored when it comes to the kind of opportunities that it can cater to. Here’s hoping that such kinds of cases along with entrepreneurial ability booming results in more and more innovative services being provided via internet.
