Naukri.com Revamped = Curved corners and little bit of Ajax

Im not sure what people mean when they say our site is revamped. The word revamped sounds so dynamic but the actual usage of the word is even when someone changes one color or one image on the site!

Naukri.com has also supposedly revamped their site. According to Hitesh Oberoi COO and director, Naukri.com “With the new user interface, Naukri.com is trying to bring existing features more upfront as members used to miss out on various existing features like job messenger.” The revamp is an attempt to make naukri.com uncluttered.

Well lets look at what they have done and then lets see if its uncluttered..

naukri.com old design

Naukri.com Now (Click on the image to view enlarged image)

naukri.com new design

As the above two images show the revamp means use of gradient colors and rounded corners. Although according to an agencyfaqs article Naukri.com is now using Web 2.0 technologies like Ajax (which automatically updates a page without refreshing) to make the site more interactive and fast. So what have the Ajaxified?? Vibhore Sharma, senior vice-president, product and engineering, Naukri.com, Thows some light on that. He says, “From now onwards a user can change his profile details, such as his mobile number, just by clicking on the edit link; there is no need to open a whole new page for it.”

Well to me it looks like a similar case like SimplyMaryy claiming to be a web 2.0 site thankfully Naukri.com was smart enough to call it a revamp and not Naukri 2.0! But its appalling how Indian consumer internet companies whether big or small lack tremendously in innovation when it comes to Design and Clean UI’s. Something they should borrow from their western counterparts rather than the ideas that are usually stolen!

Fast approaching a 1000 posts on WAT, Rajiv has been the driving force or maybe just the boss :P around here. The Chief blogger he shows a fascination for the colour blue unrivaled by anyone else. However, leaving that murky quality aside Rajiv does some excellent analysis of the digital media industry in India and often puts many in discomfort with his inimitable style of interviewing. 1. Indian Internet Companies know only this:"Internet is a Money Plant, Go and Pluck the leafs" thats it nothing else.

I agree with your last paragraph.

  2. Though I would not agree that the home page is now "clutter free"; the new look is much pleasing.
BTW, which feature of the site has been highlighted more? I don't see any such thing (at-least in the two images above). One important thing that I noticed was that earlier there were 11 images on the left panel before the scroll, which is now reduced to 9. (Thanks to the curved corners and increased spacing)

    (i) WATBlog:
    1. Both the images are pointing to the same location - http://www.watblog.com/upload/Image/naukribefore.JPG
    2. Typo: "She says" should be "He says" ;)

  3. Thanks Kapil..
We survive due to proactive readers like you.. keep it coming ;)

  4. Yes Rajiv.

The next time anybody uses the term Ajax or Web 2.0, it should be made mandatory that they take your permission on doing so first.

Watblog - Self professed sages of Web2.0.

  5. @ Jamshed: Haha.. I appreciate the sarcasm ;) .. But my point was not about permission but atleast im able to voice my opinion when i see someone is just diluting and abusing the real meaning of web 2.0. After all i do run India's only Web 2.0 strategy consulting company in WATConsult and would like to have my say ;) Hope thats fine right :D

  6. a site is much more than the home page… i use naukri and the real changes are in the way they show results… and has changed very much

  7. Certainly agree with you.

"Something they should borrow from their western counterparts rather than the ideas that are usually stolen!"

But how about borrowing some ideas yourself Watblog!

  8. @ Amit - I am not questioning the search its the uncluttered comment is what i was questioning along with revamped.

@ Critic - Wow .. Its great to know we have critics ;) .. Well as far as us borrowing ideas is concerned we believe in being original! (H) Though would love to know if you had any suggestions :)

  9. i m a regular reader of watblog. Definitely a nice blog but i guess most of the times all they do is jus keep on criticising ppl n companies. When we guys gonna give up our tendency to pull each other down….I think watblog or watconsult watever shud try to become a brand to prove its superiority rather than showing that other brands r inferior

  10. and trust me, ur website jobs4freshers.com is a bigtime cluttered website. So ppl living in glasshouses shudnt throw stones at others…..no hard feelings , jus read the interview of mr sanjeev bhikchandani , got so inspired that felt like supporting him (lol)

  11. @Sumit - Firstly Thanks so much for being a regular reader :) We are trying our best to be a brand and the very fact that you call yourself a regular reader i think we are moving in the right direction!

With respect to us always being critical i disagree! We just wrote about Sneakcast a young startup and we were very supportive! I hope you will read that article too.

As far as jobs4freshers.com is concerned firstly i think jobs4freshers has no banners and probably the shortest homepage when compared to naukri so i m not sure where it is cluttered? And comparing jobs4freshers to naukri will be foolish. I mean jobs4freshers is my small startup with very little funds to do a revamp while naukri.com is a BSE listed company.

Also I too really look up to Sanjeev Bikhchandani I think he is a inspiration to any budding internet entrepreneur in India but at the same time i can objectively look at his company naukri.com and express my views without mixing my respect for Mr.Bikhchandani with my views on their revamp.

Everyone has a right to criticise so long as the criticism is argued well and has foundation. So if Watblog has an opinion on the naukri revamp that we may not necessarily agree with that's fine.

    It's not personal.

Now - most of the comments that Rajiv has made about the improved naukri are based on the home page experience. And to be fair there are as many advertisers on the new home page as there were on the old one.

This may lead the casual observer to conclude that the naukri revamp is nothing but a poor attempt at media hype and a press releasem and some marginal changes here and there.

But actually that is not true. There are significant changes in the UI, Navigation, page layouts, application process, download speeds and features once as a job seeker you log in and then search and apply for jobs.

And this is immediately apparent to the job seeker who regularly visits naukri, has registered there and applies for jobs.

It is about usability once you are logged in.

Now what is Web 2.0 and what is not. Our understanding of the kind of stuff that qualifies to be described as web 2.0 are - user generated content, smart algorithms, decisions based on the of user analytics and clickstreams, collaborative content creation, use of technologies like Ajax, CSS and RSS, moving the site beyond the internet onto the mobile and a whole lot of other stuff.

Over the last year or so people at naukri and in our other sites have made considerable progress in these areas.

Many of the things we do wont be visible on our site to the outside observer but they make the site work better for the user.

And we measure that by metrics such as the daily application count.

We have so far seen a 20% increase in the number of applications being made daily (with the same number of visitors). Of course it is early days since the revamped site has been live only for a little while.

For us the revamped naukri is a major movement forward.

Empirical data about usage seems to indicate that our users agree.

    Just thought I would clarify

  13. @Sanjeev - Thanks for taking the time out and clarifying sanjeev. I really appreciate the positive approach and attitude that you have towards criticism/feedback that people have for your company. I guess thats what separates the the successful entrepreneurs from the not so successful ones. Hope you keep inspiring us :)

  14. Rajeev, for starters the image you have (http://www.watblog.com/themes/laila/images/banner4.jpg) at the top of the content section just drives the readable content to below the fold. The Latest comments module is visually disconcerting. Also most of the modules on the right have a bolded font which could be distracting. And how i do find top rated posts. Just 2 my paise…

  15. @Critic - Agreed we are working on those aspects. And your 2 paise is worth a lot for us. Keep it coming :)
