Selling books online was one of the first success stories of the online world. Which made amazon.com what it is today. But buying of books online is something that has never really taken off in India in a big way though there have been ecommerce players like baazee which was bought by ebay and others like fabmall which was bough by indiaplaza.in.

rediff booksBut now the largest portal in India Rediff.com is making inroads into the long ignored books segment. Rediff which already had rediff shopping as its ecommerce arm has started selling books online. According to Manish Agarwal, Rediff.com VP-Marketing, "The total retail market for books in India is pegged at about Rs 800 crore and only 10% of the total demand is completed by retail vendors while 60-70% of the need is completed by top 10 retail vendors. This implies that there is enough opportunity for rediff.com to make a strong presence in this field."

Rediff has tied up with all major book vendors like Granth and Landmark across the country inorder to make sure that readers get their books within 7 days of ordering them. Rediff also plans to add a social aspect to book shopping by adding Rediff QnA as an addon to the rediff books services thereby allowing book buyers to ask questions to other book enthusiasts.
