Yes i know the title of this post sounds pessimistic but its an attempt to show more caution than pessimism towards what we can all see is a boooming digital space in India. In the late nineties and early 2000’s there were many startups which started with the idea of pay per view, pay on clicking of ads and even pay for browsing sites.

Even now if you just search for making money online on google you will know how many of the so called guru’s are giving gyan on pay per view, click on google ads etc type of schemes.

Even in India this trend is catching up. So if Ibibo came out with a contest asking bloggers to blog on ibibo and they would give out cash worth 1.5 crores and though it would be a success they were mistaken. Ibibo’s scheme of paying people to blog only attracted spammers, porn writers and plagiarists who copy pasted content.

If that wasn’t a lesson for the others a host of new ways of paying users for diferent actions have come up.

rupeemailRupeemail - Hcitek Software Pvt Ltd, a Bangalore based start-up, has launched RupeeMail an email service that pays registered users to receive mail from companies pitching products and services. Basically get paid to recieve spam and then click on it! Wow how intelligent! According to Hcitek Software the incentive would help companies better target an audience that is more receptive to such messages. Yup and who would such arget audience be? College going kids looking to make a fast buck? Work from home unemployed people?

The money will be paid to users after they accumulate points or stamps on opening a link from an email that could then be exchanged for cash when users earn an equivalent of Rs200.
Now some might say that thats what even google does as in it pays publishers to have adsense on their websites.. But the point is they dont pay surfers to click the ads! Infact any such activity is known as click fraud. Also the person who clicks on google ads does so on his own will as he recieves no payment hence creating a credible audience and a pay per click system.
Sms Paymasters - A host of sms advertising solution providers have come up this year starting from Mginger, mGarlic, Admad.mobi, m-earn, Sms2india, Way2sms, 160by2.com & You Mint all of whom we have reviewed in this article. All of them are paying users to view smses. An even more intrusive form of advertising even though it is permission based. Defending his companies revenue model Chaitanya Nallan, chief executive of Gingersoft which owns mGinger says “The 20 paise we pay for each SMS is just not the incentive, but (there are) the cool discounts the user gets from the ads.” He compares his service to rupeemail and says “The mobile is a personal instrument. So the chances of the message being read is higher than an email.” Yes and thats why its even more harmful to user experience incase you don’t pay him money as mGinger has sent out only two cheques of Rs300 each to users who have received text messages from advertisers.
indiarocksIndyarocks to pay social money! - Social network Indyarocks.com has launched Social Money, a programme that offers cash rewards to the members whenever they send or receive an SMS through the social networking site and for uploading or viewing a video posted on the site.

Supporting this move Dr Vishnu, head of strategy, Indyarocks.com, has said in this press release “Social Money is just one way for us to reward our users for the great buzz they create at Indyarocks. From now on, all the members of Indyarocks will earn money whenever they use the ‘Free SMS Scraps’ or ‘upload/view videos’ at Indyarocks.”

Yea right! This scheme is pretty much like rupee mail you earn in paise’s from 5 paisa to 10 paisa on smses and videos as well and you can cash the money when it reaches Rs. 300! Guys i have a simpler idea to make money. Create video start your own video blog on blogger.com (with good content) on google and market it on social networks and other blogs and you will sure make more on google adsense (atleast the income will be in $’s).

I am still to understand why the entrepreneurs continue to make mistakes of the earlier dotcom bust! I can still understand revenue sharing for good content creation but i cannot fathom how content consumption can be incentivised. It corrupts the entire essence of unbiased consumption based on need and real value (not in terms of money) percieved by the user.

  1. Yes. Paying for interaction is a sure fire way to die. What do you guys think about revenue share to users from the pages a user creates? Perhaps use Google Adsense and partner with them?

  2. Bang on target. As a content user i might be paid, but what is in it for the advertisers. What kind of users do these targets.Do these folks have a profile based on which ads are targeted.
For sure ibibo kind of stuff does not work!.
I wish they grow up fast!

  3. what it shows is that common sense isn't so common after all! I can understand paying users in cases where users also contribute to the site content/experience, but paying to just view/click is a sure fire way to get a rubbish audience!

  4. i feel adsense is nothing but social money in a big sense. its splits money with content creaters and users of online medium.so if indyarocks does it the right way i guess they have a huge potential

  5. by the way i forgot to mention indyarocks has one of the best bulk photo uploader, i guess i wouldnt mind even if they dont pay me

  6. Hi Rajiv,

I am a regular reader of your blog. I will continue to be. I was quite dissapointed to see your comparision of Indyarocks "Social Money" with other rev-share programs in offering.

I wish you had tried to understand the program before comparing.

The fundamental difference between us and other companies is “we donot feed spam/anonymous messages to our members” like other companies. They only get relevant and personal messages from their own friends.

    A little more detail:

At Indyarocks, We pay users for using our free SMS scraps. These SMS scraps have user content and not pure ads.. which means.. its not a spam and no user will ever get frustrated getting an SMS from Indyarocks because its a message from friends with a relevant message. A small portion of this SMS would have a text ad embedded into it. This gives an excellent opportunity for our advertisers to reach their target audience based on age, geography without being intrusive.

Also, at Indyarocks only registered members can send SMS to people in their "friends network" only. This is to avoid anonymous or spam messages. (Registered mobile no’s are never visible to anyone)

On the Videos: Yes, you can embed videos on blogger and earn money. But hey.. why not earn money where you can upload unlimited videos, photos, blogs and network with friends from all at one place (with privacy settings). Other Members can also subscribe to your content and get updated about any new additions in your media allowing easy sharing with friends and family. Sharing here becomes more meanigful

Also, I am proud to mention that Indyarocks is the only portal in the world which offers complete unlimited media convergence with in-depth privacy settings.

Request you and your readers to try out Indyarocks and decide for yourself.

    have fun
    Kalyan
    Indyarocks
