Rediff launches web messenger in mail!

Rediff India which had recently launched vernacular blogs and blogshowcase. Has now been the first "Indian" email service provider to launch web messenger service within email account. This feature was first popularised by Gmail which really caught on with gmail users. Infact if you ask me i have my gmail account open almost entire day as i can chat recieve mails and multi-task at the same time.

Besides for the fact that Rediff has just taken gmail’s idea and replicated it though there has to be some consumer need as well i assume. Because the audience that uses gmail is different from the audience that uses rediffmail.

According to Manish Agarwal Vice President Marketing of Rediff.com "The launch of web messenger is line with changing needs of the users. Our endeavor has been to offer our users the freedom to choose the applications to efficiently manage their communication needs. The integration of web-messenger to Rediffmail is another step towards offering a tangible benefit to our millions of Rediffmail users."

With the recent steps that rediff has taken with respect to introducing applications like Ishare, Blogshowcase and multilingual blogs its seems like rediff is trying to get technology innovation within a media company. According to me both rediff and indiatimes are content driven media companies synonymous with banner ads that are irritating and non user friendly. Though i must admit changing this image will take a lot more than just launching applications that are technologically better it will require a mindset shift within the organisation and its approach to monetisation and product development which is something im not sure will change that soon in the traditional internet companies.
