In a really long interview to agencyfaqs Murugavel J the Chairman of IAMAI and CEO of BharatMatrimony speaks about the various businesses his company is has ventured into in the online classifieds space right from matrimony, jobs, properties and cars.

When asked about the potential of regional languages given the fact that bharatmatrimony have a tamilmatrimony, a gujaatimatrimony etc etc.. This is what he had to say..

Q. As you are also on the governing council of the IAMAI, how important do you think local languages are in the classifieds space? You have 15 regional portals on BharatMatrimony. How is it going to evolve?

A. I don’t think language is really going to take off (on the Internet) in India. It can have an incremental benefit, but personally, I don’t think (local) language is something India needs right now. It’s not going to happen at all.

There were other prominent quotes as well from the article. Here are some of them:

On being asked whether the jobs segment will always be number driven .. He said "I think the number game will change over the next one year because everybody will have the same number of resumes"

On being asked about the threat by social networking sites to classified space like jobs and matrimony.. He said "I don’t think that social networking will take on the functionality of classifieds. People may find a match on a social networking site, but it cannot replace the main function of a matrimony site. So, verticals will continue to rule."

Now how much do i agree with Mr.Murugavel?

As far as regional language is concerned i kind of agree currently we are too early to see regional language driven websites as a major force.

About Jobs not becoming a numbers game in the future.. I totally agree i feel Jobs will become a niche game from a numbers game. Small focussed sites on different verticals withing jobs providing better ROI and foccused resumes.

I am not so sure about social networking not being a threat. I feel the youth of today is getting much more active on the internet in their communication patterns thereby being more upfront on their needs from the online space. Even keeping the values in mind i feel though slowly but networking and web 2.0 will penetrate the classifieds space as well and it will bring better ROI as well as compared to the current way of classifieds.

  1. Regional Languages work only in Japan and China not in india. Because Every one wants to learn english and get better job and this scenario has come a long way back and all parents insists their child to learn english right from the kinder garden. So obviously people will hook on english web sites rather than regional sites.

Regional languages work in offline like news papers, magazines, FM Radio, TV Shows etc.

As IE only supports regional lang but not other browsers [if i am not wrong]

  2. I think Regional languages is the way forward for Internet to grow in India. Only 19% of the World’s population is comfortable in English & in a country like India with diverse culture and languages, a destination in Indian Languages will definately grow…In fact it’s not about people not understanding English, its about people being comfortable reading content…and its proved in other media already whether it’s print, TV,/….Internet will definately follow….

  3. As per my view its all about that you are optimistic or pasimistic.. I know very well english and my job profile is also nglish based but i don’t want to leave my mother tounge i.e. HINDI.. ya i’m agree on this point only that now a days very few people is using hindi on the net but still i’m optimistic.. because those people who want to use hindi on the net was grown exponentially in last 1 or 2 years..

  4. First of all i am a new guy in this space, so correct me if i am wrong. I think the regional languages can take off with the “access” being more closer. Like if there is a guy with a computer & internet in some place ( the way people sit with type writer in front of court’s to type legal documents), people can walk to him upload there resume and see if they got any interview appointments, etc … Regarding social networking and jobs, already sites like linkedin are offering jobs, so a cannibalization of the jobsites (naukari, monster etc ) will happen. What say ppl?
