As if responding to Robert Scoble’s post about how and ‘Why Mahalo, TechMeme, and Facebook are going to kick Google’s butt in four years’, Google has launched a Facebook application.

Well the app currently seems to be down and you’ll receive this message:

"Errors while loading page from application.
There are still a few kinks Facebook and the makers of Google are trying to iron out. We appreciate your patience as we try to fix these issues. Your problem has been logged - if it persists, please come back in a few days. Thanks!"

The application has been created by Mark Lucovsky using Google’s AJAX Search API.

But what is this application all about?

Well I’m not sure how convenient it is going to be to use Google from within Facebook as compared to the search box or toolbars in our browsers, but this does seem to be a step by Google to encourage Social Searching with a community.

You can hit ‘Share’ next to any result. Your queries are then automatically included in Facebook’s mini-feed, so your web history can be shared with your friends. Popular results are also showcased on a page.

So if you happened to search for: Ratatouille on the app and liked a particular result which was displayed – you can now share that link with all your friends and it should be auto-recommended when another friend of yours searches for the same query (in this case: Ratatouille).

Though I’m not sure if I’d be comfortable with sharing my search history with all my friends – but if some sort of a rating system can be incorporated for each result….then we have a killer Social Searching tool for the future.

About time Google enables searching the web from within Orkut too? Or are Brazilian and Indian markets simply not lucrative enough?!
