Classifieds as a space has always been the star of the internet businesses as most classified businesses be it jobs, matrimonial, real estate or cars have got funded in India. So its no surprise that now classified providers are getting into content tieups with portals.

One such tieup has happened between Sulekha.com and Sify.com who have got into a 3 year alliance in which Sulekha will provide software, algorithms and customer service to Sify Classifieds and share its database listings. Online surfers from 22 cities can post ads on either Sify Classifieds or Sulekha.com and the ads will be displayed on both sites. There is a single sign on as well on both sites.
As both Sify and Sulekha are high traffic sites this alliance would have benefits for both of them. As Satya Prabhakar, CEO, Sulekha.com, says, “This alliance will boost the number of ads posted on Sulekha.com.”.
Its interesting to see sulekha pushing its classified service. I see some real confusion in terms of brand positioning for Sulekha. I mean is it a portal? It claims to be India’s first web 2.0 site? Is it for NRI’s? Im really not sure which category i would place sulekha. All in all to me its the age old approach of lets get into everything with one brand name as we are getting a lot of traffic hence that traffic will want to see classifieds will want to blog and will want to travel etc etc. No sharp focus or positioning here.. I wonder why?

Since you folks claim to be into WAT, the question is more relevant here. Search Engines will see the same content on both the sites and Google hates such content. So will Sulekha get it indexed first so that if Google were to mark the second one as duplicate, then be it Sify ?
You are right about the brand positioning. The site started as a literary portal where wannabe writers can post their articles and stories.
Now you don't have articles or stories just blogs. And those blogs that are featured are also not any where upto to the standards that were earlier there.
Now their focus is more on their classifieds, yellow pages and other channels. They start many channels and then discontinue it. They started matrimonials, fashion, sppof channles but closed them sooner than the time it took them to launch.
The name of the site is also a problem. It was apt when it was only a so called literary portal. But now you can hardly find any 'good writing' (sanskrit meaning of sulekha) in Sulekha.
