We had blogged about Orkut being nominated as the MTV Youth Icon in India sometime back and also expressed happiness and asked our users to vote for Orkut as it just reflects that internet is here to stay! :)

So did the users vote?

Ofcourse they did! The orkut blog announced that Orkut has officially won the MTV Youth Icon of the Year beating the likes of Abhishek Bachchan, Multimedia Cellphone (Thats lame.. how about Iphone man!), Rang de basanti the movie and ofcourse YOU!

Here is a video thats being aired on MTV which has users talking about their love for orkut..

This just reconfirms the fact that the youth of today is an internet savvy youth which is more online than hooked onto TV or print.

But is the Youth Icon a Responsible Icon?

Recently one of our readers commented that orkut is one of the most irresponsible social networks. Its not a completely unfair comment as Orkut has had its fair share of troubles from Shiv sena trying to block it to girls fake profiles being created on it. Recently orkut was in news in connection with the kidnapping and subsequent murder of a 16 year old Adnan Patrawalla which made us ask the question whether orkut was to blame for the incident in anyway.

Where is orkut headed from here?

According to me people will continue debating on whether orkut is a boon or a bane and i guess different generations would think differently about the same issue. Good or ugly orkut is sort of a reflection of India’s youth and its belief’s and behaviour and one can see that by browsing through the profiles and groups. We had an analysis of the orkut youth in our Social Networking in India presentation where we had also analysed the reasons for orkut’s sucess. We had also compared Orkut Vs Facebook in this post where we had listed down the reasons of why orkut is losing out to its newest competitor facebook.

Orkuts newest feature of html scraps is probably taking orkut to a new level now but i feel they were late in introducing this feature. With the controversies getting worse by the day and the privacy issues becoming more and more important especially for the female audience i feel orkut would have to be a little quicker in its feature introductions especially around privacy and interaction which facebook scores heavily on with its open api if it has to sustain its iconic status in the Indian Market.

Conclusion: All in all whether or not orkut is able to sustain its userbase or gets taken over by facebook’s popularity in the near future.. One thing is for sure.. This Youth Icon award is an answer to those skeptics who dont believe in Internet web 2.0 and the power of youth engagement in the online medium.
