One Message Received: Daily Dose Of Dennis The Menace

How amazing would it be to read your favorite comic strip at your convenience…probably when you are still pondering over whether to get up or not or when you are terribly bored of your professors boring lectures and how great would it be to have more than one comic strip on your mobile phone of your favorite comic strip…!
It would in fact be very different from the traditional routine where you take the newspaper to perform your morning rituals with your eyes shut and by default you read the comics page which has only one strip of your favorite comic:(,
I am talking of the cheerful prankster Dennis the menace coming to your phones…
Sounds unbelievable right?
Dennis the Menace and Desperate Dan the comic book, a staple of British childhood for 90 years, is to receive a 21st-century makeover as the adventures of characters such as Dennis the Menace and Desperate Dan are sent frame-by-frame to children’s mobile phones. D.C. Thomson, the Dundee-based company behind The Beano and The Dandy, has been approached to license its characters for handset downloads. Source
How does it Work?
The new service works by sending cartoons directly to customers’ phones as digital slideshows. Strips of up to 12 frames are converted into digital files and sent to handsets using MMS (multimedia message service) technology. Operators are also looking at ways of incorporating real sounds to accompany the written gnashes, thwacks and kerplunks traditionally found in cartoon stories
The advantage of using mobile phones rather than the internet as a distribution network is that people are prepared to pay for the service,
With movies being made out of comic strips like Garfield, this Dennis mobile comic strip would boost the falling circulation of the comic strip
It not only aims at appealing the kids sector but it also aims at attracting an adult market, who by reading such comics are reminded of their childhood days.
Are people willing to pay for mobile phone comics when such are freely available on net?
Imagine seeing on the Indian mobile handsets, chacha chaoudary’s 7 foot huge side kick Saboo display his muscles on their cell screens.
Although i dont know of any such service in India, im sure we would soon be able to get receive such services, the only problem i foresee is that as cell phones are getting more advanced, we could soon get comic strips on our cell phones via Rss, which would reduce MMS costs and would probably be more customizable.(e.g. getting comics at a particular time only)
So next time when you are performing your morning rituals be sure to take your cell phone with you

Hi, speaking as the Managing Editor of ROK Comics in the UK, if you're a cartoonist in India you can sign up to ROK Comics — http://www.rokcomics.com — and add your own strips. The more the merrier! Right now ROK Comics only publishes English language comics but we do plan to roll out services in other languages if an agreement with a local telecom provider requires it.
Sounds like an interesting concept… wouldnt it be better if it included a lot more comics and gave the audience a wider selection to choose from ?
Also prohibitive pricing might make consumers stick to reading strips off the papers…
well written…reminds me of a watblogger who is not blogging these days.
