The Bollywood superstar’s 6 year jail sentence pretty much stunned the whole nation.
But it also opened up the opportunity for some guerilla search engine marketing!

A search for the term Sanjay Dutt now would show you the following ads:

Not sure if the ad by Times Packers is intentional or not. If it is – some might miss the humour…
Moving! To Jail?!
Thus relocation solutions.

Strictly for females is a rather absurd ad. Looks like an ad for reaching out to call girls?
I actually tried calling those chaps but they never answered the phone.

This was via the Google Click to Call advertising mechanism.

I hope Google looks into the above matter though – doesn’t seem to be too Clean. Anyone know what product is it?

Well another campaign which was live early in the morning for some time was the Zapak Campaign:

It says:
Don’t Get Jailed: Escape the Police & Win Premier Passes & Music CD’s only on Zapak!

Just had a word with Charles Theodore (The man behind this campaign) at Zapak. Though he refused to divulge any numbers, he said the campaign got decent clicks but not enough conversions!

I feel at times you should be allowed to forget conversions and numbers - and be allowed test out something innovative and experiment. Mainly for the sheer joy of marketing and the liberty the online medium offers us. It might not get you conversions but it will definitely get people talking about the whole move.

They might make the campaign live again in some time.

  1. Website owners look for opportunities like this. When John Chow was not ranking for his own name in Google, people started to search for the name more. So blogstorm.co.uk came up with a creative idea and they placed a sponsored ad saying "Where Did John Chow Go". So it a tactic these days..

  2. Totally agree with you Ram. SEM provides amazing Guerilla and Ambush opportunities.

For those wondering what is the whole John Chow thing about, check:

  3. Only law consulting firms will get effective reach through that sanjay keyword.,
or some tax consultants can try it using alternative ad texts

It will never work for zapak as the ad message does not speak about the game directly which will lead to irrelevant clicks

  4. Clicktocall is an amazing try though

  5. Interesting one.Reminds me of one more:A guy married in Kerala searches for "honeymoon in India" in Google and he gets the first seacrh as "HoneyMoon in Kerala" which is quite funny but cannot be avoided :)

  6. Well the "Don't get Jailed" words have changed to "Scared of Jail" and it is linked to the Kireedam Movie contest which is not really an 'Escape from the police' game.

    @ Prasath:
This would have actually worked if they had a game like the legendary NFS Hot Pursuit….where you have to escape from the clutches of the police!

Content based SEM works…especially with some Guerilla stuff!
