New & Improved Indiatimes email service. or is it?

Just came across this article on Indiatimes launching a new improved email service that is a one-stop destination to satisfy all their communication and collaboration needs on the Internet. Click here to read the article.
I went trough three Indian email service providers and did a comparison based on what features Indiatimes was offering

What are the players offering?

Features
Indiatimes Rediff Zapak
Email space Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
shared calendar Yes No No
shopping and travel Yes No No
translator Yes No No
create and share documents online Yes No No
drag and drop Yes No  Yes No
conversational view and tagging Yes No No
Sms/gprs facility No Yes No
email alerts on cell No Yes No
Speed Slow Really fast fast

Thoughts on the email services.

Zapak has made its positioning very clear. Just simple email nothing else.

Rediff on the other hand has been simple and quick as always, but they have a very cool mobile feature that allows users to see their emails using sms and gprs. mobile.rediff.com is the mobile website from where users can access rediff and rediffmail.

Indiatimes – while they are looking pretty impressive and have surely exceeded expectations, when it came to actual usage I was disappointed. Few of the problems I that I faced were.
Registration was simple but loading the new page took a lot of time.
When I tried shifting to “Rich Version” (well im still trying.. its just not loading )
The article said “The futuristic Web 2.0 Ajax-based collaborative suite ensures a reliable platform for speedy mail experience”
You would expect the Ajax feature to be quicker but it feels like a new page is loading altogether. (Super slow loading capability)

All in all it’s a great service from Indiatimes with a few hiccups. Its could probably be the best Indian email service provider and could be comparable with the likes of Gmail and Yahoo mail.
Suggestion – they should look at going mobile with this service like rediff has to enhance user experience and truly become a leader in the Indian email space. (And please do something about the speed)

  1. Rediff has drag and drop facilities…

Rest in Indiatimes seems to be a nice copy job of gmail

  2. thanks,
    the change has been made.

  3. gmail has nowhere near the features of the new Indiatimes mail. so I don't how eklavya made the comparison.

  4. GMail:
Email space unlimited – Well it's nearly unlimited and GMail were the pioneers for blowing open the segment of a huge free inbox.
    Shared Calendar – Yes
Shopping and Travel – How is this even related to Email? Why does it need a specific mention? You can easily create a folder or a calendar entry for your travel necessities.
Translator – Google has translation features and they have a ready transliteration tool too (Blogger) which they can integrate when it makes business sense.
Create and Share Documents online – Yes
Drag and Drop – Only thing they don't support as of now…but again the drag and drop think uses ajax enough to mess up a modest connection. I've used rediffmail for a considerable amount of time and still avoid using the drag and drop system.
Conversational viewing and tagging – YES
    GPRS Facility – Yes
Email alerts on cell – Since GMail is universal they don't provide this service locally, but this is still possible via some operators.

That's how I made the comparison.

  5. Well I am trying to send mail to more and more people through bcc but finding it very difficult to load the rich version page. How can i doo that…….?

  6. I love new Yahoo! mail. This is just more than my regular mail, its itegrated calendar, drag n drop, contact book, keyboard short cuts.. whatever you can think of it has it! Amazingly the best ever email service i have ever come across and its improving.

Yahoo has folder structure that keep s me well organized than being clutterd all over like in Gmail.

  7. Unbelievable!!! Indiatimes has once again upgraded & guess what, any one with an “-” in their email address has lost the same. Example if you had an email address like jack-ass@indiatimes.com then well this ID & all your message has just vanished. You now cannot create a new ID with a “-” in it.
