Global Social Networking Statistics – MySpace, Facebook, Orkut etc

comScore have released the results of a study on the expansion of social networking across the globe, revealing that several major social networking sites have experienced dramatic growth during the past year.

Social networking behemoth MySpace attracted more than 114 million global visitors age 15 and older in June 2007, representing a 72-percent increase versus year ago.

Facebook experienced even stronger growth during that same time frame, jumping 270 percent to 52.2 million visitors.

Social Networking is catching up globally as a mandatory online activity rather than simply a fad. Checking out blog feeds, scraps, online communities etc have become as common as checking your email.

Average Daily Visitors (000’s):
MySpace – 28,786
Facebook – 14,917
Orkut – 9,628

The study also included figures of popularity of Social Networks in different parts of the world.
I’ve conjured up some graphs to give you a better idea:

Orkut:

48% – Latin America (Primarily Brazil)
43% – Asia Pacific (Primarily India)
5% – Europe
3% – North America
1% – Middle East and Africa

MySpace:

62% – North America
25% – Europe
8% – Asia Pacific
4% – Latin America
1% – Middle East and Africa

Facebook:

68% – North America
17% – Europe
7% – Asia Pacific
6% – Middle East and Africa
2% – Latin America

Bebo commands a 62.5% European audience while Friendster commands nearly 89% of its users from the Asia-Pacific region.

Orkut continues to dominate the Indian scene – I wonder how long before Google acquires a social networking site or launches SocialStream. Orkut is definitely not working in the United States and Europe – Social Media markets which Google would definitely look at tapping.

If only we could cater to the general junta and provide personal feeds to all our readers.

We are looking at providing RSS feeds for specific tags….lets see if we can manage that soon.

And why do we keep talking about Social Networking? Cos' it is the most widely used Web 2.0 element in India.

Plus most of the articles are as India centric as possible.

From an entrepreneurial developers perspective, this is all very important to help us develop partnerships presenting sound justification to business partners needing confidence to mitigate the fear of risk. I would love a blog devoted to nothing but the future business magic of holistic global social systems. And it must be a global perspective. Then I could focus on my dev while an ATOM feed to my partners keeps them feeling happy to be investing in me.

    Hi Ekalavya,

Great stats. I believe there’s a lot of people out there who are very interested and keen on these numbers, because it provides us with a better perspective on the potential business opportunities, and how we should mould these businesses accordingly.

Just curious if you have any updates since your last post 1 year ago?

    Thanks!
