Kevin Rose who is synonymous with Digg, recently came up with his recent development – Pownce. What is Pownce – it’s a micro blogging platform very much on the lines of twitter, jaiku etc. So lets take this one step at a time,
What is Micro Blogging ?
Blogging in its very nature revolves around informing people on what is happening – Communicating and Conversing. Micro Blogging in the same sense helps you converse the only difference being it holds you to a certain limit of characters. Hence making the communication string concise and apt. bringing us to the point less is more. One of the reasons that Micro blogging is gaining extreme momentum and acceptance is it helps people be in touch with other people without much effort. Amongst the different Micro Blogging Platform- Twitter is one of the most popular platforms, and is now being exploited commercially by marketers and PR agencies. A list on the available Micro Blogging networks :
• Jaiku,
• Twitter,
• Tumblr,
• Moodmill,
• Pownce,
• Facebook’s status updates
• Bebo
• Xanga.
So now that we know what Micro Blogging is let’s have a look at Pownce which has been recently the most talked about and compared Micro Blogging Platform. Pownce which is still not open to the public works on invites only. I remember reading on Techcrunch that Pownce invites were being sold.
The pownce website looks great, but more often that not is subjected to lagging. The user interface is easily above average. The features on pownce are the ones that make participation on it so sticky. Its got a reply option, just like scraps on orkut and hence saves you from the trouble for adding a ‘@’ followed by the name to reply, which is how one replies on twitter. Its makes sending links and updating your friends about events much simpler. It also has an option of sending files. Though there’s a limitation on the size, this limitation along with ad’s disappears if you turn a pro powncer.
Pownce also has a desktop application which looks extremely Savvy. Its much faster in terms of updates than the website. Though it has huge drawbacks, You can only post your messages on the desktop applications to reply to a string on notes you get redirected to the main site that can get snail slow at times. What pownce still doesn’t have is the integration of instant message and mobile. This similar question was brought up on pownce a few days back and some one brilliantly answered that it could bring down the intensity at which messages go on pownce currently. As much as I agree, the site does get a wee bit painful when it refuses to refresh or chokes on me.
All in all it is a great application. Now the grand question why should you be on pownce?
• It’s a great place to network
• Isnt Time consuming
• If you haven’t tried micro blogging you could start with pownce
• It smells of simplicity, and hence is a great platform to use.
• Great and quick way to keep your self updated on whats happening around the world.
If you think you would like to give Pownce a try leave your email id in the comments section we have a few invites that we’ll be giving out. If your already on pownce you can add Rajiv and Gautam

Bouncing over Powncing… Complaing to Rajiv, have sent him a friend request, accept.
Nahi tu mujse bore koi nahi ho ga!!!
nice analysis, and agreeable too … only sometimes I think the "paid" "pro" options have been made available a bit too soon given the alpha state of everything.
I mean, have you even tried Jaiku {www.jaiku.com} it's far mode advanced and complete?
See ya in the "pownce",
Nicola "kOoLiNuS" – http://pownce.com/kOoLiNuS/
@ Moksh – Will Fwd the message to Rajiv
@ Nicola- Nope i havent given Jaiku a try, may be i will soon
See you on pownce
)
great, you have perfectly featured Pownce.
One thing i would like to add is about the desktop application, as from a user point of view yes its a drawback that for replying you have to go to the website but from a creator point of view its an advantage which lets you generate more pageviews.
After all main thing is the "website" and in order to compete with other established social networks this has to be there.
)
The biggest con of Pownce is that it does not offer a mobile interface. Added you guys on Pownce.
Jaiku works as a good aggregator as you can add various feeds there.
You forgot Hictu!, the only micro-blogging service which lets you make video posts also. Take a look: http://www.hictu.com
Thanks Luca will check it out

Just now created an account on Twitter, it is nice to begin my blogging.

Great write up! I do think that Pownce is better than Jaiku and twitter. It seems inevitable for this mobile support to be implemented. Hopefully they don't do that RSS crap like twitter and Jaiku.
Yes Howard, it surely does look like the Mobile and IM integration is going to be inevitable. Even Facebook has now added The attach files function to its wall. Many claim its a Mee too of Pownce, But on the contrary, it only allows you to upload files from websites and not the desktop, it has a great video recording feature too.
