Rediff launched their social content-sharing platform iShare around 2 weeks back and they have real big plans for it.

Rediff iShare is basically a one-stop platform where you can ‘share’ all your media content (Photos, Music and Videos). You can view/listen to this ‘shared’ content but are not officially allowed to download it. (Though we had a downloading content guide on our last post about iShare).

“Since iShare is a content sharing platform, we thought it would be best if we could have a few media partners too to upload content on our site and use it as a platform to interact with target groups,” said Manish Agarwal, vice-president - marketing of Rediff.com.

I hope their media partners won’t find it as tough as the Rediff users are doing to upload content. For uploading content on Rediff iShare one needs to download an application (1.6 mb). I downloaded and re-downloaded the app on 4 different computers and tried using 4 different Rediff iDs but was still unable to connect to the iShare uploading platform.

Rediff is also trying to find music groups and bands to upload content on iShare.“iShare is good place to showcase one’s talent in music, photography, and even dance and acting in the form of videos. We would therefore like music bands to participate on this portal and use this platform to reach out to several others,” Agarwal said.  Rediff has recently identified ‘Aarambh’, a musical band, that would upload its music content on iShare.  Rediff would also partner with Zee TV and has initiated ‘Voice of Rediff on Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’.

Rediff is also looking at in-campus marketing of iShare in colleges and would soon launch an aggressive outdoor campaign in Kolkata to communicate the value proposition of iShare to the youth.

Why is Rediff banking so heavily on iShare?
We’ve written a lot about the future prospective growth of Online Advertising in India.

If iShare was to be a big success the available ad-inventory of Rediff would grow multi-fold.
More the content and viewers = More the space for ads.

With perhaps video embedded ads not too far either. A mobile integration eventually seems pretty evident too.

Broadband penetration is also something to be looked at. Internet penetration lies at a miserable 3%.
