In a recent report and study conducted by Privacy International on Privacy Ranking of Internet Service Companies, Google was ranked as the worst company when it came to handling a user’s privacy. Microsoft didn’t fare too good either and were assessed as a company which had ‘Serious Lapses’ when it came to handling a users privacy.
Well Microsoft has decided to put some pressure on Google and hopes to appear to Online Users as a more ‘We-care-about-our-users’ company.
‘Microsoft, the world’s biggest software group, is calling on the global industry and civil liberty groups to develop a common set of privacy standards for data collection, use and protection in the proliferating field of online search and advertising,’ reports the Guardian.
Some highlights:
- Microsoft is joining Ask.com in offering web surfers a way to use its search engines anonymously, and the two companies are now calling on the search and online advertising industry to develop a common set of privacy practices.
- Microsoft will make search query data anonymous after 18 months by removing cookie IDs, the entire IP address and other identifiers from search terms.
- Recognising that - Customers clearly want the best of both worlds in terms of best-value services and protection of their privacy. Users should be able to search and surf online without having to navigate a complicated patchwork of privacy policies.
- …users will be able to opt out of behavioural ad targeting by third-party companies, allowing them to surf without being personally identified.
Microsoft is investing massive efforts to catch up with Yahoo and Google in online search and advertising. They announced Q2 results last week which showed a 7% gain in net profit to $3 billion and sales on course to hit around $57 billion this year.
