Well apologies for posting this quite late. This report has already been talked about by most of the web tech blogs in India!
First things first. Who is comScore?
comScore is a renowned marketing research company that provides marketing data and services. They track internet data on its surveyed computers and provide great insights into online behavior.
In case you still missed reading their first report on Internet Usage in India, here are some figures to ponder on:
My comments in italics
• Indian Internet population stands at 22 million. (IAMAI put this at 40 million +. So in one sentence by comScore – the entire possible market for Web products got reduced by almost 50%! Budding entrepreneurs might have to make some serious corrections in prospective sales figures)
• The Internet penetration in India is only 3%
(This can only improve. 3% of the entire population is more than the population of several countries!)
• Yahoo! sites lead the pack with 14 million unique visitors in April 2007
(Yahoo Mail is still enormously popular and Yahoo still rules the scene when it comes to Online Games and Chatting).
* In terms of engagement, Yahoo’s reach is 64 per cent while Google’s is 62 per cent. * Google scores higher in terms of the time spent by visitors on its networks, at almost 4.5 hours per visitor for April 2007 (Reason: Orkut?)
* Search as an activity has gone up by 11 per cent over the six-month period under study, with 14 million users. (SEM agencies would be smiling. Last Wednesday at the SEMPO meet, I came across an interesting statistic – In India the drop-out after the 3rd page of results is far more than international standards. It’s almost as if – users don’t consider visiting a site which is not present in the top 3 pages. SEO companies should be thriving!)
* Google search predictably leads with almost 12 million users, though Yahoo! search has grown faster than Google during the said period, at about 16 per cent.
(This is a rather interesting statistic – If Google is commanding 12 million users just via their Search facility, does it mean unique Orkut, Blogger, YouTube users do not even amount to 2 million? Because Yahoo is said to be leading in India with 14 million users!)
