Google Operating System says:

Google already has a social network (orkut), but it’s only popular in Brazil and India, doesn’t have a Googlish interface and had a lot of security problems in the past. That’s why last year Google sponsored a project at the Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute whose initial goal was to "rethink and reinvent online social networking".

So what is Socialstream?

Socialstream is a system where users can seamlessly share, view, and respond to many types of social content across multiple networks.

Socialstream would be based on a unified social network (USN), a single network that provides social data to other sites as a service. It represents one possible way of accessing the information spread across participating networks.

Some key elements:

  • Aggregated Social Content
  • Serendipity & Structure
  • Sharing Without Barriers
  • Publisher Feedback
  • Users Can Help Each Other

Sounds real interesting – and it could be a one stop hub which connects all of Google’s various applications.

So there could be basic networking – using the Orkut model.
A robust people search – mashing up pictures, audio, video, google maps etc.

Orkut is well behind MySpace and Facebook in the US and many European countries, so a product like this – Unified Social Network – would be the apt way to go, because trying to compete with the established players from scratch is going to be real difficult.

It would be nice to see how they plan to shift the Orkut guys in Brazil and India to the new ‘stream of social networking’.

Here’s a video on Socialstream, gives a nice overview:
