‘A picture says a thousand words… a video says it all,’ says Fropper.com.
In what they call as a Curtain Raiser launch – Fropper has uploaded some videos and is hoping that users would start using the video feature, which almost every Social Network offers. Ratings, comments, privacy settings etc. are to follow soon.
Fropper, belonging to the People Group (Shaadi.com etc) – has never really appealed to me much. A site which was launched to primarily be a Dating site and which eventually caught the Social Networking bus kind of lost its value during the transition phase. They could have tried to remain the elite ‘Dating’ site but have now become just another also-ran in the Social Networking scenario. They’ve slipped to Rank 148 in India according to Alexa.
Their latest move truly signifies their aim in competing with the likes of MingleBox, Yaari, BigAdda etc in the Social Networking scene. Though Anish Sapra (Manager – Online Marketing @ People Group) still believes that they are India’s number 1 dating site…
But has online dating ever kicked off in India? Are girls really comfortable with the concept of going for Blind Dates with random people they meet online?
Cultural upbringing, the mindset of the Indian youth, lesser number of girls online etc are all possible reasons why Online Dating is still a distant Indian dream.
Fropper unlike the new social networks already commands a certain amount of re-call value and they can still build on this and the People Group platform to grab a considerable share in the Social Networking pie, but for that they have to be willing to undertake some radical steps…
On a parting thought, if Fropper really had the strongest model – then would Sequoia still have looked at funding MingleBox?
(Sequoia Capital have invested in the People Group)
