‘Google launches Indian transliteration services s/w’ reports Busines Standard
What is transliteration?
Imagine typing out Hindi words using phonetically equivalent English script, and seeing the words getting transformed into the corresponding Devanagari script.![]()
“Technologically, translation and transliteration is possible for local Indian languages. But I cannot give a time line for their launch. We are working on all products that will be beneficial to Indian users. We must be sure before we come up with a beta product,” Kannan Pashupathy, director, international operations of Google, told Business Standard.
Well apparently they Google haven’t officially launched their transliteration services yet, in fact there’s not even been a beta launch. Google is yet to offer Hindi - English translational services. Currently the transliteration service can be accessed via Blogger and their R&D team is working on extending the same technology to other products, including email.
Well we blogged about the transliteration incorporation back in April:
Ab aap hindi mein blog kar sakte hai
Well I would really like to see Google incorporate this @ Orkut.
Be it a limited alpha/beta launch, but it would be great to see if users actually use it. This would be a nice strategy to reach out to the Non-English proficient junta which exists there.
Though India also possesses the largest English speaking audience – so it might not really get the entire junta to start scrapping / msging in Hindi, but it would be a nice option to offer the users.
Well a similar Transliteration service provider – QuillPad by Tachyon Technologies are doing some real impressive work.
They currently offer transliteration services in Hindi, Kannada, Malyalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu!
And the interface is real simple, in fact they call it an “my-mother-can-easily-use-it” interface.
Social Networking Sites and Social Media Sharing platforms (like iBiBo and Sulekha) should look at incorporating something like this as soon as possible.
It also makes great sense for sites offering traditional classified services like Matrimony and Jobs. A simple service like this coupled with additional translational services can achieve a distinct rise in user base.

i types this on quillpad
"yeh to mast feature hai, this thing will work well on mobile phones"
and i got this back
"एह तो मस्त फेआटुरे है तीस तिंग विल्ल वोर्क वेल्ल ओं मॉबीले फॉनेस "
notice the transliteration of "feature" . I guess this needs to be also cutomized for Hinglish, not just english alone.
