Music industry losing out to Mobile Music.
The music industry is taking a big hit as the number of physical purchases are decreasing rapidly. The mobile music industry is picking up steam in India. Indians have purchased music more on mobile phones than any other method of purchasing music in the first three months of 2007 and is expected to reach 9 times more than any other format by 2009 according to PriceWaterhouseCoopers .
The mobile music sales is really expected to soar in the coming years. From a Rs 1026 crore market in 2006 the mobile music market is said to be Rs 3600 crore by 2009. The total Music sales from Rs 1,782 crore in 2006 to Rs 4,100 crore in 2009. It is also believed that mobile music may soon be the biggest source of revenue for mobile operators in the coming years.
The road ahead?
Vas. Vas. Vas. We have been mentioning this in almost most of our mobile related posts. Operators like Bharti earn over 10% of their revenue from Vas. Bollywood earns only 40% of its revenue from the box office, the rest is earned dvd’s and a lot of mobile content like ringtones wallpapers callertunes etc. there is great potential in the Vas segment. As users are getting more mobile savvy they are adapting to the new ideas that come along the way. The Vas market by the end of 2007 is said to be worth Rs.4560 crores.
There is no need for the Indian music industry to get worried as the sales will still remain (infact It will increase) only the medium of purchase will be different. Mobile music sales are said to increase by 100%. Unlike US where there is a 1:1 ratio of physical music sales in comparison to mobile music sales.
