Celebrities and WEB 2.0
Today HT Café carried an article on how there are many fake profile (or not) of small screen actors on Orkut. Celebrities are Celebrities only if they are embraced by the common man. Their over priced perfumes and fashion labels are bought out of the hype that is created by their audiences.
Their interaction with the audiences has been either through events or some exclusive interviews on Television. Lets look at why would or why should Celebrities engage in social media to interact with their audience.
If celebrities were to start using the interactive medium, it would create an online frenzy. It is no secret that some celebrities in India are treated like GODS. Lets look at hypothetical situation to understand if WEB2.0 would work for celebrities. If Ganguly maintained a blog during his down fall with his cricket career recently, which consisted of his efforts to get back in shape, and prove his consistency it would have immensely helped woo off (if not all but some) negative publicity.
Amir Khan’s blog on Lagaan DVD, seems to getting him great response. I saw about 3 posts that had more than 100 comments. He very modestly admits in his blog that he is not a technology person and hence maintaining a blog is a huge deal for him. This blog will surely help to sell his Lagaan DVD’s and He also
mentions how this blog helps him connect without any mediator.
Besides blog, rare interaction with their audiences through social networking would help increase not only brand value but gain appreciation from the masses. It would be unwise and naive to think that these mediums wont backfire. The chance of the people leaving indecent comments or message is a huge possibility. Then again not going ahead to interact with audience due to these reasons will also be foolish. For Eg: Britney Spears has appealed to her fans to think of a name for her upcoming music album.
If celebrities do use social media to better interact with their audiences, online reputation management would be required. The fun quotient (hypothetically speaking) would be two celebrities engaging in mud slinging via the means on new Media.

For heaven's sake stop using Web2.0 with our knowing the meaning !
Just because an idiot called o' reily coined a faltoo term doesn't mean it has to be used by everyone !
