Burrp a local search engine for restaurants pubs discotheques, bakeries etc have recently launched an sms based services for mobile users that allows them to be updated with the latest news on restaurants pubs etc.

Users get the latest news about restaurants in their locality and are also updated with new restaurants in their locality and the ones that have shut down, you also receive updates when users review restaurants in their locality. Users can customize their preferences and choose any one, two or all three options. It’s great for any food enthusiast.

The problem I foresee is the irritation of messages that may feel like spam later on and users may keep deleting the messages from their inbox consequently also deleting the contact numbers. The other problem I find is that every time I want to get alerts about other localities (the ones I don’t stay in) I would have to go on the website and make the changes and would be able to get alerts for one locality at a time.
They should look at multi locality searches where one can search/ subscribe for more than one locality as in a city like Mumbai there are new places opening up everyday, also the problem of area exists. Most of us still wouldn’t know where Bandra ends and when Khar starts.

One can also access the burrp website from their cell phone. The website shows up reasonably well. But when it comes to mobile search I feel currently Onyomo is better, it is probably because they have a dedicated Wap enabled website for mobiles oWap.in and also they also show latest movies running in theaters. Burrp also plans to provide such services like Cinemas, Theater & Dance, Museums, Art Galleries, Spas, Salons, Gymnasiums, Book Stores in the near future.

To be fair both the search results are pretty good. May be burrp should also look at users sending reviews directly from their cell phones the participation level increases. We recently also covered an interview with the CEO of burrp. Click here to read the article.

Now with Nokia entering the local search market and providing a complete package, it will interesting to see the other search engines next move.

  2. Hi Insomniac,

nokia has already started this service. We ourselves tested the product on our phones & it works just fine. the application can be downloaded from their website. and in case if u read Times Of India (local news paper) u can check out todays issue there is an ad by nokia marketing the service.
    Good to see reader participation.

  3. Hey WATblog, thanks again for the mention. The feedback you guys give here is bang on. The very next evolution of alerts will allow users to set multi-locality alerts. It simply is not fair to the user to be constrained to one locality, and we realize that. Look out for it soon.

We're also in development with a mobile-friendly portal for better browsing experience on hand-held devices, but the focus for now is really SMS.

    Keep up the good work!
