eBay thinks out of the eBox. Looks at rebuilding infrastructure.

‘eBay is rebuilding its technical infrastructure in a project that could lead to the e-commerce giant hosting applications from outsiders’, reports CNET News.
An initiative, internally referred to as eBox, calls for the company to rebuild the technical frame of eBay.com as an “open platform” comprising a series of modular services, rather than a single, unified application.
This will allow internal engineers, and maybe outside developers, to combine the pre-built services to create new applications without the need for extensive coding. Perhaps taking a cue from the immense success of FaceBook’s F8 platform.
eBay has not yet made a definite decision on whether to open eBox to outsiders, but the likely business model would be a profit-sharing situation with third-party developers.
All of the functions on eBay, including search and inventory management, will be accessible as services via application program interfaces (APIs).
One can expect 3rd party widgets from sellers which display the latest products or auctions closing soon. Users can choose to embed these for quick reference. Another idea can be sellers (retailers) on eBay can give the option to regular buyers to download desktop widgets which gives them updates on a particular auction or other product listings.
This service-oriented architecture will also make it easier for new features to be introduced.
