JuxtConsult has recently come out with its report India Online 2007 which throws up an interesting set of numbers as compared to the same report done last year

  • 66% users came from SEC ‘A’ and ‘B’ classes in 2006, only 56% come from these classes now.
  • 19-35 year age groups accounted for 76% users last year, they now constitute only 67%
  • 17% internet users in this country who come from an IT background as against 21% last year.
  • 1% increase in Usage of Cyber cafes over last year and now sit at 47%
  • 7% increase in Credit card usage since last yearnow at 34%
  • 90% of users have mobile phones, as against 85% in 2006

The India Online Report also did a survey on brand recall for online players and cam up with the following result

The following inferences can be made from the above numbers.

a) Internet is slowly but surely penetrating B and C class cities

b) Home internet usage is growing as cybercafe growth is just 1%

c) Online ecommerce can look forward to a brighter future due to credit card usage.

d) Social Networking works in India if done right :) (See orkut brand recall)

e) Non IT guys are increasingly using the internet (a good sign for businesses other than IT to look at internet in a more serious manner. Stuff like corporate blogging for example.)
