Well this news is just in.. Cricinfo (probably one of the best cricket related sites in the world) which was owned by Wisden Group has been acquired by the sports tv giant ESPN.

On the acquition Russell Wolff, managing director, ESPN International, told agencyfaqs “Growing our business in the on-line world is vital for us to serve sports fans. Cricinfo is a tremendous property with a great fan base and it will be a strong addition to ESPN.”

While Tom Gleeson the managing director, Cricinfo, had this to say, “The relationship between ESPN and Cricinfo has been for a few years now, and this acquisition will further spurt the growth of cricinfo, with ESPN’s expertise in providing online sports content and also marketing sports and online properties.”

This deal really puts Cricinfo in the driving seat when it comes to cricket related content. The internet penetration in India is growing and so is the broadband capability which would surely make seeing video clips a growing phenomenon. So with ESPN backing cricinfo now there shouldn’t be a problem when it comes to streaming cricket related video content as ESPN would hold content right not only of new cricket matches but old as well.
