Countdown to Cannes - A look at some Grand Prix probables
Email It!
This ones on request of Harish – A WATblog reader. So we’ll get off the web for this post and look at the traditional forms of advertising. But as you would notice, most of them have been highly viewed on YouTube – which is a great parameter of Viral success!
The Grand Prix contenders are lead by the ‘Paint’ commercial for Sony Bravia created by Fallon London. It was definitely a difficult task to follow of the remarkable Sony ‘Balls’ commercial from last year and this campaign doesn’t disappoint.
4 lakh+ views on YouTube:
Making of the Ad can be seen here.
The Cannes Lion is often seen as the pinnacle of achievement in the Advertising world – and this year they have received a record of 25,660 entries.
India is the 6th largest contingent with 931 entries.
Here are some of India’s hopes for this year….
Firstly there’s the brilliantly executed – Happydent White (City of Lights) commercial. But the root idea of the concept of ‘Brilliantly white teeth – being used for illumination’ is not really new and thus might not go down well with the jury.
1 Lakh + views on YouTube:
The MotoFlip (Dinner) Ad is one of my personal favourites. The whole concept is simply awesome for a country like India - where everyone wants style and wants it cheap!
Watch it here:
Back to the international scene – another leading contender is the ‘Happiness Factory’ commercial of Coca-Cola created by Wieden + Kennedy Amsterdam. They take you through a highly imaginative 3D journey.
Highly viewed on YouTube:
A campaign which really went Viral was the Dove’s Evolution spot. It’s got more than 70 Lakh views on YouTube. The realistic feel really did wonders for O&M Toronto.
Vaseline’s Sea of Skin, created by BBH New York is also a notable entry. It’s Ravi Deshpande’s (India’s representative on the Lions film jury this year) favourite. I liked a particular quote of his – “The closer an Ad gets to the Grand Prix, the less it looks like an Ad and the more it looks like an art form.”

Some other cool ones:
Altoids (Fruit Pants)
Cockroach for Bangkok Insurance by Creative Juice/GI
…and here’s a really cool print Ad worth seeing (Clima bicycle locks).

Thank you WATblog! Great collection. I love the Motorola ad too. I loved your anti tobacco ad. Keep up the good work
Nice collection. i have always wndred what does the A in WAT stand for and why you guys dont cover Advertising to a greater extent. i think guys like you can help evolve advertising in india. hope to see more press and tv ads being covered. brand equity calls the viral factor as the new Holy Grail of advertising. The hutch live search ad appeared on youtube and watblog before it came on tv.
Hi Ramesh….am really an ad-geek…n love checking out all kinds of stuff in the advertising world….but since we've positioned watblog as a web advertising tech blog….we don't post too much about other forms of advertising. we'll definitely cover anything new in the online advertising scene…after all most the web 2.0 applications are looking at surviving on online advertising…..and we are sure to see lots of innovations in this space.
From time to time we'll post about ads such as the Hutch Eskimo ones - since they are basically internet based products.
Cheers!
@ Harish: You're welcome…nice to have regular readers like you!
Your blog is not aptly named in that case.
It should have been Web: Advertising and Technology.
But since it is Web, Advertising and Technology you bloggers need to blog about Advertising be it any kind and more of technology. I don't see anything on Linux, ubuntu, iphone?
@What WAT? - Thanks for your intepretation
But WAT is combined and not separate. Yes we do have categories that are separate but most of our posts have some portion of all three web, advertising and technology in various proportions ofcourse. So thats what WAT is! Hope that clears your doubts.. And one more thing.. things are flexible..
you cant hold us legally liable if we do post something beyond WAT sometimes.. Dont sue us! (lol)
you guys are confused about your content by the looks of what u've written in your comment.
i said covering ads and more technology will get you more readers. people come in thinking you cover ads and tech too only to see only web.
take this as feedback and not as a joke to be laughed at
Feedback taken dear.. But i think you should read our about which is right on top "WATblog is a community of bloggers who have experience in Internet Advertising and Technology. WATblog will have articles relating to the rapid changes taking place on the web and the interactive advertising space. We will also discuss technology be it web or mobile technology. Hope you have a great time reading :)"
Hope this clears your confusion :))
