mobile webMobile web users stands for those users who surf the web on their phones using either wap or gprs. Till last year the Indian % of users among the total mobile web users in the world was limited to 4%.

But a new survey by UK-based Bango Plc, which tracks the users from over 190 countries has stated the following % for different countries

  • UK is 27%
  • US is 21%
  • South Africa is 11%
  • and India is 9%

According to this report India lacks the infrastructure for a better fixed line phone so mobile usage and subscriber base would continue to grow thereby making India even exceed european levels of internet usage on mobile in the next couple of years.

Now given the fact that the above boom is going to happen one needs to look at what is being done to make mobile web browsing more friendly (after all usability would drive growth as well.). One of the key initiatives that was taken not so long ago in mobile web aspect was the introduction of .mobi domains and its subsequent popularity. Also recently one of our indian readers sent us this story of how .mobi domains were being booked by domainers (These are people who books domains and then resell them at a higher price to make profits. Domains are like real estate. read more on this here.). Also the reader sent us prices like 5000$ at which he was able to sell these domain names (many of them with indian words) which just reinstates the fact that there is a realisation and also a growing demand now for mobile web friendly sites.

Lets hope that mobile friendly sites do crop up in india to provide better usability and drive more growth in the mobile web space.
