Microsoft begins work on new Search Engine, Ask.com re-launching and MyLiveSearch to rival Google

Google’s domination in the Search space is inspiring others to build stronger and better search engines.

MyLiveSearch hit the news last week – when they said they were building something to rival Google and that “searching the internet will never be the same…”.
They are planning on a world wide launch around the end of June. It is the brainchild of self-taught software developer Rob Gabriel. Mr Gabriel, says his search engine gives better, more relevant results than the search king because it is a truly "live" search.
How is MyLiveSearch different from Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft’s Live method of spider crawling?
(These search engines work by building a vast index of web pages, via automated "spiders" that crawl through billions of web pages a year. However this represents only a fraction of the enormous, sprawling internet)
MyLiveSearch works through a small browser plug-in. The search terms are put through Google, or other indexed search databases, but those results are treated as "starting points" alongside the user’s bookmarks and other popular web hubs.
From there, the live search takes over, crawling through hundreds of web pages connected to those starting points in search of more information relevant to the search.
What intrigues me is the similarity in name with Microsoft’s Live Search.
Ask.com is publicly re-launching around 1030 AM (IST) tomorrow morning.
TechCrunch reports - At the core of the changes is a move towards simplicity, though, which may count for more than the other changes.
There’s a very Google-ish look the new Ask site. Less clutter, lots of white space. Users can select their skins and they are planning on offering users a similar option as iGoogle.
The search results are highly customized depending on the type of search you are conducting.
Here’s the search result for ‘Shahrukh Khan’:

They give me the option to Narrow or Expand my search. Display regular search listings in the middle panel. The right panel has some of Shahrukh’s images, along with his Wikipedia info and search displays from the blogosphere.
Searching for a music artist (Pink Floyd) displays images of the artist along with clips via iLike on the right bar. Searching for a city (Mumbai) gives me options like map, weather information, current time etc.

Microsoft are working a new powerful next gen search engine…
TechCrunch reports that:
“Microsoft has gathered a team of twenty or more “rock star” developers who’ve been tasked at building their next generation search engine, a source has told us. The team, which supposedly came together recently, is based at Microsoft’s Silicon Valley headquarters in Mountain View.”
They have even moved down Sanaz Ahari to lead the project. She was the youngest lead product manager in Microsoft history at 23! Sanaz was part of the core team that developed the start.com product, which was later renamed live.com.
