In a move which can definitely destroy the usage of RSS readers (at least in India), Orkut have introduced an Edit Feeds feature.

What is a RSS feed?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.

What is this feature about?

You can now use Orkut as a feed reader.
You can add feeds of your favourite blogs, albums (Flickr), News etc.

What they say:
Want to share your photos from Fotolog, Picasa Web Albums or Flickr? Have a blog on Blogger, WordPress or LiveJournal?

Now, you can add your blog, photos, events, bookmarks and more to your orkut profile. Add the website or RSS/Atom feed address below and orkut will automatically import it and fetch new items.

All your friends (people visiting your profile), can see your subscribed feeds.
Interesting method to test Blog RSS marketing and also to Socially Share content you like.

Once I clicked on Edit Feeds, it directly displayed all my Google Entities – i.e. Picassa album, Blogger blogs and gave me the option of subscribing to them.

This is a screenshot of what WATblog looks like, while reading it via the Orkut Reader:

This was a feature I really liked at IndyaRocks - but I do have my apprehension about how widely it’s going to be used.

Orkut temporarily went down (It’s down as I am writing this), so we’ll have some more screenshots later -

Well, Orkut is even more popular than Google in our country – and it’s time Google came up with some tweaks and features to retain the Orkut junta. Scrapping is slowly losing its charm.

FaceBook on the other hand is slowly but surely catching up in India, especially with them opening up to the entire developer community recently – Google definitely needs to gear up to ensure it does not slip up in Brazil and India.

The Picasa integration was inevitable and perhaps deeper integration with Orkut Albums will happen soon.

Reason behind this whole move?

Something new at Orkut to get users excited about.
This is also a move by them to let the users use Orkut for all their regular blog reading purposes. Random surfing will ensure discovery of new blogs.

Financial Sense?
Monetising via Text-Ads in the future. After Google’s recent acquisition of FeedBurner, it makes all the more sense.

  1. I can only imagine what it will be when they make feedburner's feed available to users to search and add automatically. Currently besides for the feeds that are linked to your google id other rss feeds need to be input by the user themselves. This would become as simple as it could once they integrate a search and add feature for feedburner feeds.. wonder when and if at all that will happen!

  2. It would be interesting when Indian users realize the business benefits that RSS offers. When that happens they'd look beyond the traditional functions of a RSS Feed Reader.

I do hope RSS doesn't become a dead-horse by that time. Things move pretty fast when it comes to technology.

Facebook has had RSS feeds for quite some time now.
Orkut is trying to catch up.
write something about the features facebook is incorporating..that might make for interesting reading.
