eBay StumblesUpon for $75 Million
![]()
eBay- an online shopping website has just acquired Stumbleupon a social discovery service for $75 million.
StumbleUpon has shown a tremendous rise in the past 1year and has grown nearly 150% since then having around 2.3 million users and approximately approximately five million recommendations daily. StumbleUpon allows users to access new random websites based on their preferences e.g. – technology, photography etc. the websites are provided by the users themselves and acts as a sharing platform. They also provide a toolbar.
StumbleUpon is a great fit within our goal of pioneering new communities based on commerce and sustained by trust,” said Michael Buhr, senior director, eBay.
“StumbleUpon’s downloadable toolbar provides an engaging and unique experience to its users, but it is the similarities in our approaches to the concept of community that make it such a compelling addition to eBay.”
Said Garrett Camp, chief architect and one of three StumbleUpon founders, “We’re excited about joining eBay, as we share the same values around community and we look forward to working with them to accelerate our growth.”
We had covered an article earlier eBay to acquire StumbleUpon. where we had mentioned google having somehting similar on their toolbar (a dice) when clicked takes you to a page which google thinks you may interest you based on your earlier searches. It will be interesting to see google’s next move.
Just a thought- if eBay was to incorporate the featuers of stumbleUpon on their website??
One would be able to come across random products based on their preferences. E.g. Mobile phones, televisions etc. (cool)
In the past eBay has also acquired brands like PayPal, Skype, Shopping.com, and other’s.
