Gmail increases Attachment size limit to 20 MB

Google has upgraded their Gmail webmail service that allows users to send attachments of size upto 20MB.

However the new file service increase won’t help you if you’re emailing someone outside of Gmail since most other services cap the attachment size at 10MBs or less.

Competing services like Microsoft’s Live Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail does not allow this much capacity for file attachments. However Rediff allows a capacity of 10 MB of file attachment.

Another thing that Google has to work on, is that it does not show any kind of progress bar when the files are being uploaded. With now Gmail supporting bigger attachments, they need to add some kind of progress bar to show how much of the files have been uploaded. Progress bar helps the user to know how much of the file has been transferred.

There are sites such as Sendthisfile which helps the user to send a file, no matter how big it is. However one has to register oneself so as to use the facility. The site boasts of having a large number of useful features for business users.
Then there is a site called Dropsend which allows users to send files upto 250GB. However this site comes in a paid form.
Sites such as YouSendit allows a special feature of 100 downloads per file over 7 days for free registered (YouSendIt Lite) users. 3 downloads over 7 days for unregistered users. The person downloading must be a registered user.

There are a lot of sites which provide large attachment space. As the need for larger attachments with heavier files being transferred, free email clients like Gmail and others have to upgrade their attachment size or else users will be moving towards the sites mentioned above for their large attachment sending needs.
