DD Channels soon available on mobile handsets.

DD Doordarshan channels will soon be viewable on your mobile handsets. Channels like DD National (DD 1), DD News, DD Bharati, DD Sports, DD Urdu, DD Bangla and DD Podhigai will be free to watch.

Prasar Bharati CEO B S Lalli told indiantelevision.com the pilot project is only aimed at reaching mobile phones within a radius of ten kilometer of the Doordarshan television tower on Parliament Street in New Delhi. After the launch of this service in Delhi, the system will be replicated in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.

The Channels available seem very intresting considering the language diversification in India.

Lalli also stated the scheme was ‘vendor neutral’ and any Mobile provider could download the signals and telecast them. Currently there is no real agreement made with any mobile providers.

Mobile phones are becoming more affordable. One can get a good (configured) cell phone for approximately $200 (Rs.9000/-) which would be camera enabled having Gprs capability and able to download applications, e.g. Nokia 6600.

Bharti Airtel was also to launch its Mobile TV service this may.
