Rediff is one indian portal that seems to have monetised its internet traffic to a great extent without completely losing out on usability (though i still feel they can do better.). and their quarterly results emphasize this fact.

According to a press release Financial Results for Rediff for the Quarter Ended March 31, 2007

Revenues for the quarter ended March 31, 2007 totaled INR 37.4 crores, an increase of 66% over the quarter ended March 31, 2006.
India Online revenues, which include advertising and fee-based revenues, for the quarter ended March 31, 2007 totaled INR 27.8 crores, an increase of 76% compared to the quarter ended March 31, 2006.

Operating EBITDA increased to INR 8.9 crores for the quarter ended March 31, 2007, compared to INR 3.1 crores for the quarter ended March 31, 2006.
Net income for the quarter ended March 31, 2007 was INR 8.8 crores, compared to net income of INR 2.3 crores for the quarter ended March 31, 2006.

Though the above numbers look excellent i feel as the internet market matures in India and along with broadband penetration click to conversion based ads and video ads could become more in vogue than they currently are. Also web 2.0 related products which engage the user both as a contributor and as a viewer of content will be much prefered destination for online advertising as well. It will be interesting to see how rediff positions itself to these changes in the future.
