Desi Podcasting – It exists!

Podcasting is a very powerful web 2.0 tool, yet a large population is still not very clear about it, specially in India. How many of you know about any Indian podcast? Out of the few who know, how many actually listen to one? (Do I see any hands??)

So, before I let you know about the happenings in the podcasting scene, let me give a brief about podcasting.

Wikipedia defines a podcast as “a digital media file, or a series of such files, that is distributed over the internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers.” Basically, in lay man’s terms, a podcast is an audio clip or file that is broadcasted over the internet. These days digital, portable audio has become pretty much synonymous with Apple’s ipod, I’m sure most of would’ve figured out how podcasting got its name (ipod + broadcast).

Has the podcasting scene hit India? Well, not in a big way, but it sure has. There are a number of Indian podcasts out there waiting for the craze to catch on. Some of the popular Indian podcasts are-

PodTech India - Pretty much the most popular Indian Podcast.
Indicast
PodMasti
Indiavibez

The latest happening here is the entry of podbharti.com which is the first “pure Hindi” podcast. Podbharti has tied up with Indicast to share content. Language is getting a lot of importance on the web, we’ve told you about Google Desktop Going Hindi some time back. Blogging In Hindi has also picked up and now comes the entry of the first “pure Hindi” podcast.

PluGGd.in also has a few podcasts in which they’ve interviewed Indian start-ups like Burrp and Indyarocks.
There are a number of podcasts in Indian regional languages, here are are few-

SangeetCast – Malayalam and other languages like Bengali
Varam Oru Arayam – Tamil

Lets hope podcasting picks up in a big way in India, we’ll just have to wait and see. Nice to see people coming up with new ideas like podbharti.com, we wish them luck.

I'm a huge podcast junkie and I have few Indian podcasts I update everyday. Out of the India-centric podcasts you have listed, I find PodTech India very useful. They have detailed interviews and I get to know new faces – not the lame/same ones. India podcasting is a great way to get to know the tech scene. While traditional media reminds me of tabloids, few good podcasts would quench my thirst. :)

NewsGulp does a very good job of aggregating some good podcasts feeds on their site. You can play and download the podcasts right from their page. Some of the above mentioned sites are already being aggregated by NewsGulp.

Thanks for mentioning Podbharti. I think Podbharti will also be different in the sense that we would cover News & Views about current affairs as well and not just music and technology.

I’m sure most of would’ve figured out how podcasting got its name (ipod + broadcast).
Well that is a big misconception :) From the Wikipedia, "Podcast is a portmanteau of the phrase 'Playable on Demand' (POD) and broadcast".
