The new & improved Yahoo Travel

Now if you want to know where you are gonna plan your next trip, Yahoo has the answers. Yahoo travel now boasts of having a "recommendation module" of where you can go for a holiday. Basically the feature works the same way as Amazon where it recommends books to frequent visitors to the site.

Yahoo Travel selects "Today’s Picks For You" travel deals. These are ten travel deals supposedly based on preferences that one sets in his/her profile as well as preferences determined by one’s online activity. In theory, if one has to search on Yahoo for, say, the weather in Delhi, India, chances are next time one goes to Yahoo Travel, you’ll have a suggested deal for Delhi. The "Show Me" drop down menu separates these deals into different kinds of themed trips: romantic, near me, family, etc.

I spent a good part researching about the site, I learned rather quickly that this site can be hard to navigate because there’s a lot happening on the page. After a few searches for Qutab Minar, Humayun’s tomb I was a little bewildered to find that my recommended travel deals back on the home page suddenly included flights to United States and hotels in Croatia.

As for the destination guides, these write-ups come straight from Rough Guides. This can be helpful if you know very little about a place, but the quick summary is basic. The ability to search through fellow traveler’s itineraries is a great feature. You get there by clicking on the "Trip Planner" tab at the top of the screen. One can also suggest names of restaurants, places of attraction.Only yahoo users are allowed to suggest these things.

One last notable feature is the site’s new mapping functionality, which allows one to layer images over a map. One can adjust the opacity of both the image and the map beneath it.But a user may face problems if he is searching for a place in Delhi but a user who plans a vacation in Paris may not face the same problem because Yahoo has given a detail search on the maps of Europe and United States, all the important destinations are found in these maps. What I feel Yahoo should work on the maps of India because India is ranked among the top 3 adventure tourism destinations in the world. The difference is shown below. The maps are not very clear but you will be able to understand it…If still not clear visit Paris and Delhi.

Yahoo’s jump into travel personalization is laudable, if not entirely unexpected. The site has great appeal for the person who wants to explore possible trips or vicariously enjoy those taken by others. But the design is bit too cumbersome. Just have a look and tell me what you think.
