In our recent articles we have been talking about mobile companies going to rural India and mobile manufacturers coming out with cheap mobile handsets. But we haven’t really discussed the other side of the coin. the nu,ber of Smart phones are increasing in India among mobile users. indians are getting more tech savvy.
According to InStat, a leading market research firm, 18.8 million smartphones were sold in APAC in 2006 and this number is expected to increase to 64.2 million by 2010. As per the IDC, "70 percent of mobile devices will be Smartphones by 2010." Currently the market for Smartphones is 38 percent.

This comes as no surprise  as disposable income of people in India is increasing and users feel the  need to be constantly connected (also a status symbol). With companies like Nokia, Sony Ericsson and others releasing smart phones, the use of mobile becomes limited only to the extent of ones imagination. Mobiles are more than just a voice communication device in today’s times.
Mobiles act as a one stop shop for users to keep in touch with friends/associates, manage contacts, calendars, surf the net, check e-mails etc. Nokia’s E50, E61, E65, E61i and E90 are a few smart phones available in the market. They are not too expensive when compared to other smart phones like I-mate, O2, Palm etc. they provide applications that are required by office goers on a daily basis. A little know fact is that, companies are the big buyers of Smart phones who in turn give it to their senior executives. Executives can even use these phones to make presentations.
The major benefit of staying in touch while roaming about is a 60 percent improvement in business productivity, according to Forrester Research.

According to Norm WK Lo, VP, APAC, Research In Motion (RIM) HK, "The penetration of the smart phones in India is at a nascent stage, but it will take off. We are also planning to launch a couple of new models."

With companies introducing mobile TV and others allowing users to access all their IM’s, i keep sayin it will say it again, mobile is surely the way to go.

Just to give you a little example of Smart phones going big.I had recently gone to a local restaurant in Mumbai (Fine Dine). when i gave the order I was very surprised to notice that the waiter was talking my order on a PDA (yes a pda) that directly sent a message to the kitchen giving the kitchen my order. How cool is that???

  1. My friend bought a Nokia N95 for 40,000 and within 2 weeks the price was down to 33,000!!!

    What a waste…!

The Indian sphere needs some compelling apps for Smart Phone usage to really explode – except for the usual camera and mp3 player.
