A social network with a difference.. Too bad it aint Indian!

The social networking market is exploding, new networks coming up every now and then, we all know that. Why should you join a new one? Well, lets see… What’s the most tiring, time consuming and irritating part of getting onto a social networking site? yup, its the sign up!! All those questions, the "write about yourself" essays that got to you in 5th grade come crashing back to haunt you once again, and again and again!! Now, a lot of us want to leave them blank but we don’t because we don’t want your home page to look lame and empty, so we put our creative writing skills to the test!! Some are gifted, so they get away with it, some aren’t, lets not talk about those!! Well, now here’s a social network that does all this for you, no writing, nothing!! Its called imagini.net, its a UK based network and is growing (over 2,127,000 users) fast!

They have a concept called visual dna, its as simple as it sounds. Basically they ask you a question and give you a number of pictures to choose from and ask you to pick the one that best describes your answer, based on your choice they map your "visual dna"!! The sign up has some 13 of these questions asking you about your kind of music, art, vacation, the usual stuff. Once you’ve answered these, the end product is a little scrapbook that has the site’s interpretation of the choices you made and it talks about the kind of person you are, your habits, idea of fun, music etc etc.. The kind of stuff they write makes you sound really cool. You know the kind in which they turn a couch potato into a yoga guru who’s more in touch with his inner self!! But isn’t that what all of us try and do (in vain!!) ??

On your homepage, these guys show you a list of people who match your "personality" (basically they show you a list of people who chose the same pictures as you did) and the extent to which they match (percentage of common answers). So unlike other networking sites that focus more on creating an online replica of your friend circle, these guys, it seems, want you to meet new people and they’ve made your job a lot easier…They even have a "facewall" that’s got mug shots of random users, so you can just pick one and take a look at his/her profile.

The idea is great, something that really sets them apart from the rest of the pack. But how long can it last? The site doesnt have the option of uploading albums or videos, the only way to communicate with another person is via personal messages. So one would say that other than the sign up, they dont have as much to offer as other social networks do. They want you to meet new people, similar people. So will this eventually become some sort of a dating site? who knows?? whatever it is, as long as it works, who cares!!
