We recently posted a review of around 20 Indian YouTube clones and you would have noticed that some of the sites were paying their users to load videos, primarily to promote usage and also get content. In January we had posted that YouTube was looking at exploring revenue sharing with it’s users.

And now…

YouTube has finally decided to pay some of it’s video content creators.
Starting tomorrow, the company will launch a program that puts the creators of some of the more popular YouTube channels — including Lonelygirl15 (Jessica Lee Rose recently won the Best Actress in the recent Webby Awards in the Film and Video category), LisaNova, HappySlip, renetto, Smosh and valsartdiary — on the same playing field as large media partners like CBS.

“A select group of content creators will get promotion on the YouTube platform, and we will help them monetize their content,” said Jamie Byrne, vice president of marketing at YouTube, in an interview on Thursday. “This will help erase the the stigma around the user-created content, and, to be honest, these guys are media entities in their own right.”

With the power of the Web 2.0 users pretty evident now (After the Digg episode) it’s nice to see the bigger players beginning to appreciate their users. At the end of the day, the users are the ones who are responsible for your success in this space.

“We want to ensure that these talented people can start making a living off their efforts,” said Byrne. “We hope this will inspire others to create their own original content.”

Revver and Metacafe were the first video-sharing sites to share revenue with their users.

  1. Interesting! Some of the people are definitely going to make money, girls like Mia Rose which sing songs well enough and look good on screen as well, already get tons of views. This will definitely be a big add on for them ;)
