US Daily newspapers circulation further declined by 3.1% in last six months according to NAA, but Website traffic of major newspaper websites gone up by 5.3% in the first quarter of 2007. Analysts believe it is mainly due to increasing desire of instant gratification and boredom with print medium

Revenues from classified ads, Recruitment ads, a key revenue source for newspapers, are severely effected by websites like craigslist. Publishers are building up their Web presence, but online ad revenue Increases have not compensated for the drop-off in print revenue. Traditional newspaper subscription models are proving difficult to implement online, because most content online is presently free, purchasing articles does not work.

USAToday.com announced a whopping 380 percent increase in registrations since it re-launched with social networking features last month. The newspaper website has reinvented itself as an interactive, social networking hub packed with user-generated content, videos, blogs and reviews. Registered users can create personal profiles, ‘friend’ others, interact with USA Today journalists and comment on content.

How can the newspaper industry survive in the age of Internet?

  • Create new content in niches (such as expert analysis, alerts, mobile clips)
  • Find ways to enlist non-journalists as content creators or acquire sites that do this, as The New York Times did when it purchased About.com
  • Invest in technology, offer users to personalize and share the content
  • Translate the brand power and credibility (if any is there) to web
  • Sell innovatively, ask your advertisers to sponsor content (Philips sponsored NY Times opinion section for a month)

  1. Your blog says - Web advertising technology blog in india. Can you give me some indian statistics please? Is indian readership going down too?

I think you had posted a post earlier in which you mentioned in India, local dailies' readership would increase and English dailies would suffer. Could you share your insights on that?

  2. Univ of pune did a survey on online newspaper reader habits in India

    Key Findings:

nearly 62 per cent of the readers of Indian newspapers were non resident Indians based in the U.S. and only 10 per cent were based in India

Readership was higher in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh compared to other States

The majority of readers were in the age group 21-40. Almost half were professionals in education, IT and media

47% of English readers and 36% of Marathi readers visited archived material

I think revenues from websites may be very less,
but there is a transition on how Indians are consuming news (esp among IT prof)

  3. I think there was on article on watblog about that research. It was pretty absurd. Had figures like 80% people spend more than 30 minutes per day reading the newspaper online.

  4. Hi Chirag!

We are grateful to loyal readers like you. I think the post you are talking about is - http://www.watblog.com/?content=detail&id=393

and even i share your apprehensions on that particular research.

We'll try to get some Indian figures for you soon.

    Cheers,
