Mumbai Mirror headlines today:

Orkut has agreed to not only block ‘defamatory’ content, but also provide IPs from which such content is generated; cops can now track down offenders quickly.

We had a recent post about Orkut getting bigger and bigger by the day in India and this move takes things to new heights.

On the 16th of April – Indians commanded 14.05% of the total Orkut population.
Today on the 1st of May, Indians now command 14.62% of the total Orkut population.

The first page coverage would ensure that even those who have not heard of Orkut in Mumbai, would be logging on to it today!

The pact, which is actually an "informal arrangement" called the Priority Reporting Tool, comes as a big surprise to internet users as Orkut has successfully blocked attempts by various countries to control content.

Confirming the arrangement, a Google spokesperson said: "The Priority Reporting Tool between Mumbai police and Google has been designed to improve communication between Google and police. We are happy the police has found it useful. Google is a responsible company, and we also ensure we protect users’ privacy."

Deputy Commissioner of Police (enforcement) Sanjay Mohite said the pact means they do not have to go through the lengthy process of asking the Central government to communicate with Orkut.

I would say, Google has given in rather meekly this time around. Perhaps they realise that they cannot afford a ban on Orkut in India, where it’s popularity is immense and they are being able to monetize it quite efficiently.

  1. This is probably a good thing. Orkut is quickly turning into a spam, porn and crap site - and the threat of police monitoring it might do it some good.

  2. pretty sure that this news will have heavy negative impact of orkut users.now as we browse through oorkut we find that more than 40% of Indian profiles are fake and most of them belong to people who are involved in sleazy activities.now they all will become dormant for few days and this will have negative impact on orkut.we can not say this will gain respect from orkut users because the damage has been done to orkut beyound control already.
just type in the key word mumbai in orkut and see for your self #! :$
