India’s future - Broadband to be free and 500 Million Mobile Subscribers by 2010

Posted by Rajiv Dingra on April 26th, 2007.

I hope what i have read actually turns out to be the future for India. The government proposes to offer all citizens of India free, high-speed broadband connectivity by 2009, through the state-owned telecom service providers BSNL and MTNL.

The government has set a target of 9 million broadband connections by the end of this year, of which 7 million are expected from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited. There are 2.3 million broadband customers in India.

And its not only broadband connections according to India’s Communication Minister Dayanidhi Maran total phone users in the country would cross 250 million in three or four months as deregulation, greater competition, lower costs and technological advances have spurred growth in the telecommunications industry.

"Now we are looking at a target of 500 million by 2010," Maran told reporters.

Now all this does sound great but i really do hope the free broadband internet does become a reality as it would be something that would have a trememndous positive impact on internet usage and internet acceptability even in the rural areas.
