The recently concluded web 2.0 expo held in San francisco had many announcements but some were far more noteworthy than the others. The most noteworthy was one by Web audience measurement firm Hitwise. Hitwise stated that only 0.16 percent of Youtube’s (the video sharing giant wich was bought over by google) traffic is uploading videos while only 0.20 percent of visits to Flickr, a popular photo-editing site owned by Yahoo Inc., are to upload new photos. Compare that to 4.6 percent which is the percent of all visits to Wikipedia pages that are to edit entries on the site. Could wikipedia participation be higher just because it doesn’t make money from its users while youtube and flickr are commercial sites? Well there will be many inferences from these statistics.
Another noteworthy event was John Battelle’s interview of Google CEO Eric Schmidt in a keynote conversation at the Web 2.0 Expo where Eric spoke about search, ads, and apps, including an announcement that Google is working on adding presentation-sharing.
See the video below..
The other noteworthy anouncemnent was made by chipmaker intel which has brought together Six software companies that specialise in next-generation Web applications and announced plans to launch a collaboration software suite for business productivity.
NewsGator, SimpleFeed, SixApart, Socialtext, SpikeSource, and VisiblePath would be powering Suite two with the following blogging powered by Movable Type; RSS courtesy of NewsGator; a search wiki thanks to Socialtext; and new social networking capabilities from Visible Path.
This move puts Intel in the same space as Microsoft, IBM, and Salesforce which are also aggressively pursuing the enterprise Saas market with different products.
The web 2.0 expo also saw the announcement of Techcrunch 2.0 a demo type conference initiated by techcrunch and sponsored by Sequoia Capital. Their concept is to bring together 20 new startups in a selection process driven by merit rather than the ability to pay to present. There is a similar event in India called proto which was held in Jan and is soon to be held in July in Chennai and has opened nominations for startups.
All in al the web2expo has attracted the views and reviews of many people and one can read all of them here, here and here.
