Zapak gets a revamp.. looks to rule the 21 crore gaming market

Posted by Rajiv Dingra on April 5th, 2007.

Zapak got a revamp recently and added an unlimited emailbox along with the other niche offerings like zapak girls and zapaktv. I also got a promotional mail from zapak (as im a subscribed member) informing about two free games i can download.

Besides for revamping the site zapak is planning to increase its offerings and open gaming cafes in the country. The company is looking at introducing subscriptionbased content next month.

"Presently, our portal offers 220 games. We have also launched a special gaming zone for women called zapakgirls.com, where one can play 25 games. While most games on the internet are based on adventure sports we have created special content for women based on fashion and makeover besides offering interesting puzzles. We will be adding new games to this site soon,” said Rohit Sharma, COO, Zapak.

"We will be setting up eight cafes covering all metros in the country by the end of April and by March 2008, we will have 250 cafes in 35 cities,” Sharma said.

"Our revenues come from advertising and next month we will introduce subscription-based content . This paid services division will help us increase turnover. We are also planning to introduce MMOG next quarter, which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously on the internet,"’ he said.

Now according to a report by IMRB for IAMAI The indian online gaming market is pegged at 21 crore only. Which seems paltry when you consider the amount of ad and marketing spend already made and to be made by reliance entertainment for zapak.
But according to IAMAI president Dr. Subho Ray "Online gaming is in a very nascent stage in India, our aim in conducting the study at this early stage was to bring to light the current status. We believe that early interventions can enable the industry to achieve maturity in a shot span". He also felt that "online gaming is one of the major drivers of internet adoption and use, and it is necessary that this segment is given all the necessary encouragement that it deserves."
