Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched IRCTCmobile which is gprs based, it is a graphical interactive interface for booking train tickets, for mobile phone users. For using this application, mobile users need to have Java-enabled handsets (to view graphics) and their handsets should be gprs enabled. The application is based on a patented technology of Mr Sam Pitroda’s US-based firm C-SAM.

IRCTC already had the option of ticket booking through mobile phones using instant voice response (IVR) and text messages. This new application from the most popular indian ecommerce site on the web states the fact that internet on mobile is where the future is.

Currently, this facility can be used to book i-tickets only — thus tickets will be delivered to the postal address given by the user during booking. IRCTC plans to enable e-tickets - wherein passengers can take a print out of the ticket at their own end — in subsequent phases through this application.
