After investing in a travel portal and launching a gaming portal now Reliance is looking at entering into two more segments. The first one is movies which it wants to acter to by entering into the online dvd rentals market and the other is the much crowded social networking space.
Now lets analyse these two spaces.. Firstly the dvd rentals space has two fundd players in seventymm and madhouse.in and hordes of new players entering the market.
While social networking has a king in orkut.com and its dominance is so emphatic that other indian social networks are resorting to spamming on orkut to drive traffic to their site!
So as far as im concerned the only way i see Reliance making a dent in these markets is by pumping loads of money in marketing! While that might work with dvd rentals im not too sure whether it would work with social networking as fropper has already used the media muscle to run a social network and has faltered on too many times.
DVD Rental Biz seems to be the happening thing nowadays !
I recently enrolled as a member with this movie rental co. called-Madhouse @www.madhouse.in.
Must say that they have a fantastic collection of titles and the service is good too.I got to see flicks like Basic Instinct-2,Traffic Signal and Khosla ka Ghosla which I missed on the theatres.
Pricing is good too.I guess they are going to soon start posing competition to the PVRs/Wave and other cineplexes
