Cleartrip.com the sherpalo ventures funded travel site has launched an sms based service that aloows users to book tickets through their mobile phones. According to contentsutra Cleartrip has alliances with eight airlines, and to limit the length of the message, they’re restricting results to 8 deals and using airline display codes (example: DC for Air Deccan).

One can book tickets by smsing to Cleartrip’s own short code at 667744, currently available on Airtel, BPL, Hutch and Reliance.

I think an sms based service though cumbersome is the most well understood and commonly used feature in a  mobile phone and probably more number of users are likely to use sms based ticketing than gprs or wap based ticketing options from their mobile phones as penetration of gprs is lesser and its adoption is even lower.

  1. Actually, we only provide a search for air fares via SMS, there is no facility to book via SMS.

As you've mentioned SMS can be cumbersome and we don't believe it provides an _easy_ or _secure_ way to relay all the information needed to process a booking and the payment.
