Are wiki’s the future?

Just came across an interesting article in Adage which talks about wiki’s and their significance to marketers. For all those who dont know Wiki popularised by Wikipedia (which is powered by an open source media wiki software) is an easy way for a group of users to collaboratively author content. According to Wikipedia, a wiki lets visitors "easily add, remove, and otherwise edit and change available content."
So what is so different in wiki’s thats not there in blogs? Well wiki’s are more collaborative source of information than blogs while blogs are a monologue with readers adding comments to express their views Wiki are a collborative content creating and editing engine which creates a common knowledge pool thats beneficial to all.
The article stated that Wikipedia attracted about 165 million unique visitors in December, according to ComScore, making it the sixth-most-visited collection of web properties in the world, after such giants as Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Time Warner’s network and eBay. As of October, when Wikipedia last reported its stats, 158,000 contributors — or Wikipedians — had edited at least 10 times.
Marketers internationally have started looking at wiki’s to solve various problems like EBay has used wikis in its customer-support section, letting users collaboratively write answers to frequently asked questions while T-mobile launched a sidekick wiki to provide support for Sidekick fans, who are extremely social, tech-savvy and often fiercely independent.
So are Indian Marketers opening their eyes to wiki’s? Not yet but there is WikiCamp happening which is being organised by The Knowledge Foundation, the same group behind events such as Barcamp Chennai, Blogcamp and Proto.in. There are already 128 attendees confirmed for this camp! So if you dont know much about wiki’s and want to know more.. WikiCamp could be a good starting point!
So is Wiki the future? Could we see indian corporates ever using a platform as collaborative as wiki’s? I think yes! and it would happen sooner than we can think but it would have to be done carefully or else it may also backfire!
