google to fund Indian startups!

Well this one seems to be great news for startups in India!

Google is looking to fund startups in India but is not doing so directly! Instead they are contributing an undisclosed amount to Seedfund, a $10-million to $15-million fund that had its first closing in November 2006, according to red herring.

In October 2006, it bought the video-sharing site YouTube for a record $1.65 billion though its unlikely that we will see any deals close to that in India but just the fact that google is investing its resources in an Indian fund seems to send a signal on the things to come.

Seedfund is managed by Mr. Gandhi and Bharati Jacob who have run Infinity Ventures, a profitable early-stage fund when the term was not fashionable in India and Mahesh Murthy who is a successful entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

Well here’s hoping that we see some interesting investments at the seed stage in the coming months in India
